Graphlex backingWe have developed our patented Graphlex backing to give excellent stability, preventing tiles from moving, curling, shrinking or expanding. This considerably extends their life – and Graphlex supports sustainability in several other ways:

 

  • Recycled and recyclable
    A high proportion of our backing’s content is recycled, and it can be recycled again at the end of its life
  • Lower emissions
    Graphlex gives off very low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other substances that impair indoor air quality
  • Less need for adhesives
    Our backing helps carpet tiles ‘hug’ the floor, so they stay in place with very little or no glue, which cuts emissions even further during fitting. It also works perfectly with our TacTiles glue-free installation system
  • Better insulation and sound absorption
    The excellent thermal and acoustic properties of our Graphlex backing can help improve wellbeing in workspaces, and helps save energy.

LCA of carpet tile backings

Life cycle assessment confirms that Graphlex has a lower environmental impact than current available backing alternatives. But we want to do more. We are continuously looking for alternatives for our backing, including new sources of postconsumer recycled content and bio-based materials.

Zero virgin backing

Our objective is to produce backings with zero virgin materials while improving all the standard characteristics associated with carpet backing. Today all our carpet tiles have a minimum recycled content of 39% thanks to the backing. Our aim is to have zero virgin materials in our backing by 2020.

Magnetic backing
Our Magnetic Backing is specifically designed for metal floors, such as Interface’s cable management system Intercell®, facilitating easy access to cabling in the sub floor.

The Magnetic Backing is applied by integrating two magnetic strips on our standard Graphlex® backing, retaining its full magnetic properties which will last for the entire life of the tile, without affecting the operation of computers, magnetic storage devices or underfloor communications.

Magnetic Backing is suitable for installation in areas with very heavy traffic.

ReCushion Bac®
ReCushion Bac® is a backing system developed to increase under foot comfort and improve acoustics. It is suitable for heavy traffic areas such as offices, conference rooms, shops and hotels, as well as healthcare and educational establishments.

ReCushion Bac® further improves the acoustic properties of the carpet tile and reduces the effects of echo and impact noise. The backing is ideal for use in openplan workspaces, where noise is often a problem. ReCushion Bac® is manufactured using pre-consumer recycled content in the construction.
